A Growing IMaGe in College Sports
Once IMG acquired ISP Sports, one of its main competitors, it clearly established itself as one of the major players in college sports. According to USA Today, upon federal regulatory approval, IMG will represent the multimedia marketing interests of 80 schools, including 34 of the 65 schools who compete in conferences making up the Football Bowl Championship Series, plus Notre Dame. IMG could present its schools as a national unit for prospective sponsors, which could mean more revenue for the schools and IMG.
Through its Collegiate Licensing Company division, IMG now provides licensing services for schools responsible for about 75% of the estimated $4.3 billion in annual retail sales of college sports merchandise. IMG's college client list already includes Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, Kentucky, Oregon, Nebraska, Tennessee and Florida. From ISP, it will add Alabama, Georgia, UCLA, Washington, Arizona State and Virginia Tech, among others. Any cut of that kind of money is enough to make Warren Buffett giddy.
