Dollars and Athletic Success

Using Florida as the focus, Joe Drape and Katie Thomas of the New York Times News Service provide an interesting perspective on success in sports other than football and basketball, examples of the corresponding infusion of significant cash into those programs, and the role of the Director's Cup in measuring the collective achievements of the athletics department and in the compensation of the athletics director.

Florida's spending on nearly every nonrevenue sport has more than doubled over the past decade, even after adjusting for inflation, according to financial documents reported annually to the NCAA. Spending on women's gymnastics, swimming and track grew even faster.  To read more, click here.
