Too Many Bowl Games and Too Few Teams

With 35 post season bowl games it is probable that there will not be 70 teams with winning records, which is an NCAA requirement for participation. The NCAA is starting to look into relaxing the rule. Hopefully, the elimination of many of these "let's celebrate mediocrity" bowl games will be one of the long term outcomes.

Cal Drops 4 Sports

In its latest move to cut costs, the University of California, Berkeley, announced plans Tuesday to eliminate four intercollegiate sports, including baseball, and end financial support of its championship men's rugby team. The other sports dropped were men's and women's gymnastics and women's lacrosse. Reducing the number of intercollegiate teams from 29 to 24 will save an estimated $4 million a year and affect 163 of the school's more than 800 student-athletes, as well as 13 full-time coaches.

NAAC Creates Reasonable Standards

The National Association for Athletics Compliance has announced the creation of “Reasonable Standards,” which are intended to establish a model for all institutions to follow to monitor compliance with specific NCAA rules and provide education on those rules. The three Reasonable Standards released by the Association are in the following areas: Countable Athletically Related Activities; Complimentary Admissions; and, Recruiting Contacts and Evaluations.

Additionally, the school was found responsible for its failure to monitor these violations. The major violations were committed by assistant football and basketball coaches.

The league will withhold $9.255 million from the revenues otherwise distributable to Nebraska when it leaves for the Big Ten next summer and $6,863,600 from Colorado as it moves to the Pac-10. Nebraska won't immediately share in the Big Ten's higher revenue numbers, but it is expected that within several years that revenue share will be in the $20 million range.

Dallas Joins SCAC

University of Dallas president Thomas Keefe announced that the university will accept an invitation to join the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) for all sports. Dallas currently has 13 intercollegiate athletic programs at the NCAA Division III level, and will begin conference play in 2011-2012.
